Handheld and mobile messaging devices represent a large amount of potentially discoverable information that is commonly ignored. Evidence may be stored on a handheld device that is neither stored nor backed up anywhere else in an organization.

How do we collect data from Handheld Devices?
Each device type is handled differently, but data is generally exported to an intermediary format -- anything from raw ASCII text to Microsoft Outlook PST files. Once exported from the device, we are able to manipulate and import the data into our system for processing and export to one of our many supported types.
Note: Many mobile devices only store text from e-mails and download attachments on demand to conserve space, making it difficult to rely on only mobile message devices for e-mail discovery.
I am already collecting the custodian’s email; do I need the device's data as well?
If a user’s device is not managed by a company-wide enterprise server then you will most likely not see e-mails sent directly to or from the device. Conversely, even if the device is connected to an enterprise system, you will miss out on all of the non-email related types mentioned above.
What if I require assistance with a device not listed?
As we continue to expand our support for legacy systems and keep up to date with new devices, it is our job to stay on top of the latest trends. Please do not hesitate to inquire about any device, old or new.
